Discipleship and Devotion
Discipleship is the lifelong journey of following Christ. This journey, which begins in Holy Baptism, is sustained through hearing God’s Word and receiving the Lord’s Supper, and is encouraged by walking side by side with fellow disciples. Because of this relationship, discipleship and devotion naturally go hand in hand.
When we think of devotion, we often think of daily practices such as reading Scripture, praying, or using devotional guides. These are vital, and we seek to support them at Immanuel with resources such as Portals of Prayer, seasonal devotionals during Advent and Lent, andchildren’s Arch Books. Devotion also means listening to God’s Word in person and through digital resources, like Know Your Bible, a devotion heard Monday through Saturday at 6:55 a.m. on WZZB AM 1390 or FM 99.3 or Dial-a-Meditation, a call-in devotion you can hear anytime by dialing 812-522-1345.
At the same time, devotion can take shape in delighting in the good gifts of God’s creation, such as gardening, walking in nature, or pausing to enjoy the beauty of the world around us. While these things do not deliver God’s grace in the same way Word and Sacrament do, they point us to His goodness and glory, as the psalmist declares: “The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands” (Psalm 19:1).
At Immanuel, we invite you to grow as a disciple of Jesus by cultivating both a Word-centered devotional life and a devotional life that rejoices in God's goodness in the holy ordinary. Together, let’s discover the joy of following Jesus together as disciples.
